Is luxury a bad word?

Some people may think Luxury is a dirty word and often think of it as an unnecessary use of resources for ego chasing purpose. However, Luxury means more than that. ‘Luxury’ used more in the original's sense, is to indicate an object that was more beautiful or precious than others. When you think about it that way, sustainable luxury works hand in hand. With this in mind, you can make mindful choices that care for the environment and live the lifestyle that not only feels good but is good for more than you or your family. It’s good for the environment. Lets take travel for example… (whenever it is they allow us to travel again) A lot of Airlines offer low emission flights and whilst there are not as many of them available, you can book in advance to ensure you get all the seats you need. A little organisation hurt nobody right! There are also a lot of luxurious hotels and villas around the world that focus on preservation and conservation whilst providing a luxurious service treating their guests like royalty. Alila Villa Uluwatu in Bali is one of the most breathtaking villas. It’s the very first resort in all of Indonesia to receive the highest level of certification from EarthCheck for its myriad environmentally sustainable design measures. Sanra in Tulum, Mexico is arguably one of the most luxurious hotels you can find, yet they make everything in house. They built all aspects of the property with the environment in mind. They build everything above the sand to minimise environmental impact and allow the sea turtles to nest. Room, please!! Now if you decide that overseas travel doesn’t line up with your sustainability values, there are plenty of sustainably conscious resorts in Australia. From its conception, Emirates one and only Wolgan Valley, was built with ecological sustainability in mind. They nestle this resort on its own 7000 acre wildlife preserve in the Blue Mountains. It has a waste management system in place that includes rainwater collection, domestic water recycling and the use of recycled building materials. Another simple way to improve your eco luxe lifestyle is to set aside some budget for better quality items, this way you have a gorgeous piece whether it is preloved or purchased new but you don’t have to replace it like you would an item of less quality. Spending more in one purchase saves you money in the long term, if you choose a piece you know will be a staple item and last years. It also reduces emissions as fewer items need to be produced. Researching the brands you spend your money with is vital, as you need to make sure the brand themselves have sustainable practices and are playing their part. A lot more brands are choosing to provide products in recycled packaging, using natural ingredients, and using low emission transport to get the goods to your door, using recycled timbers, etc. Whatever the brand does, just make sure it aligns with your values and you feel good about spending your money with them. For example, Loro Piana recognises, through luxury fashion, its customers can contribute to the wildlife and the natural world. Loro Piana the eco-luxury brand has partnered with the Andean Paisano people of Peru in saving the Vicuna from extinction. Google them! They are too cute! Making better choices on where you spend your money, planning for things and saving for them means a better lifestyle for you and a better world to live in. There is no downside to the eco-luxe lifestyle !! Make sure you don't miss out - Sign up to "The Bare Facts" at barebeautyhouse.com

My story

Hi Im Naomi, Founder/colour master and sustainability leader at Bare Beauty House. I have been in the hairdressing industry for just over 20 years now and in that time I have worked internationally as well as with some of the biggest names in the Australian Hairdressing Community. I had the privilege to join the Matrix HOT (House of talent) team where we were involved in getting 100 models coloured and styled for hair expo 2018. In addition I owned and ran a hair salon in Sydneys Eastern Suburbs for 6 years and have recently opened my second salon Bare Beauty House which is an eco luxe hair and beauty salon. The driving force that created Bare Beauty House was the combination of two passions. A passion for the hair and beauty industry and a passion for the environment. At Bare Beauty House sustainable luxury is achieved by offering services in a completely green environment. All the products used are biodynamic/organic and/or are made of natural ingredients that are PETA certified and involved in fair trade practices. The Hair and Beauty Industry has a very high plastic waste issue. A lot of people are unaware of this problem, as the beauty industry is all about creating beauty but the “Bare Facts” are that 8 Million tonnes of plastic, litter our oceans every year. (nationalgeographic.com) "My love of animals, in particular marine life, has always driven me to be a better person and make better choices. After seeing countless videos and images of animals stuck in waste, or consuming our waste, in particular plastic, and seeing the ocean suffer due to our negligence I decided enough was enough. I needed to do something different, with the vision that I could impact my local community and hopefully a part of my industry, for us all to make some positive changes.” All salon waste is recycled through a company called Sustainable Salons and the salon uses Eco Heads shower heads which purify the water and reduce the amount of water needed by 65%. Bare Beauty House has been created with the buildings heritage in mind, staying true to its traditional elements and blending it with the newer additions needed for the salon and eco friendly elements such as the veggie patch and worm farm in the courtyard. The clippings from this veggie patch are gifted to local restaurants. The salon also plans to incorporate a street library on the side of the property and start a regifting service where clients and the local community can regift and re-use unwanted glass bottles as well as offer a refill program for certain hair and beauty products. Bare Beauty House plans to be involved in the local community planning clean up events as well as promoting local eco fashion/jewellery designers and alike. Stepping foot in our salon, is like arriving at your best friends place, you’ll be welcomed into our house, with old school charm, by our passionate and highly skilled team. Addictive customer service, paired with luxurious treatments, that don’t compromise on quality or the environment, is at the heart of everything we do. All because we believe "Beauty shouldn't cost the earth" Want to get to know me better? Pop into the salon for a chat I'm always around! 35 Pittwater Road, Manly

  5. Always use a sun factor.
  6. Natural acne remedy - Apply a hot compress to your pimple for a few minutes, then apply hydrocortisone cream to deflate the bump DO NOT POP IT
  7. Skip intense heat to avoid redness in your skin. This includes saunas, steam rooms and spicy foods

5 hair treatments from your pantry

Have you ever wanted to try an all natural at home hair treatment? Maybe you want to reduce the amount of chemicals that get absorbed into your skin, or maybe you just don't have the funds for a treatment but your hair so desperately needs a bit of love... Whatever your reasoning, I have the solution! Here are 5 treatments you can whip up with staple items in your kitchen. Repair damage with an avocado! Mash a whole ripe avocado with one egg, then apply this home remedy to wet hair. Leave on for 20-30min and then rinse well a few times before shampooing and conditioning hair as normal. Avocados are rich in vitamins, essential fatty acids, and minerals that will help restore luster to your hair. You can repeat this treatment once a week for damaged hair and once a month for healthy hair that may just need a boost! Treat dry brittle hair with butter! Melt a small amount of butter into a medium - thick paste, allow it to cool and then cover your hair with the butter. Cover your head in a shower cap to lock in the heat, allowing your cuticle to open up and the butter to penetrate the hair. Leave it to sit for 30mins. Rinse your hair well and shampoo and condition as normal. You can repeat this once a month. Condition your hair with olive oil Warm half a cup of olive oil (do not boil it) to put the moisture back into your hair. Apply the warmed oil to your hair, cover with a shower cap or plastic bag and then wrap everything in a towel. Leave it to sit for 45min, rinse well and shampoo and condition as normal. Put the shine back into your hair with tea Use a quart of part warm, unsweetened tea as a final rinse after your regular shampoo. Tea can enhance the colour so make sure to use a tea that works with your hair colour. For example Brunettes can use English breakfast, Blondes can use camomile or white tea and anyone with a fashion shade would be best sticking with white or chamomile tea. Keep your hair conditioned when swimming Before or after a swim you can protect your hair from the harsh elements with a homemade rinse of 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar mixed with 3/4 cup water. Simply spray your hair down with this solution before and after you swim to stop any chemicals drying out your hair or worse stripping your hair colour. I would love to know how you went with your treatments, so please get in touch with your feedback! Make sure you don't miss out - Sign up to "The Bare Facts" at barebeautyhouse.com

Hair Myths.. Busted

MYTH 1: Stress causes grey hair. TRUTH: Your mom is likely to blame for this common misconception, if only we had a dime for every time she told us we are turning her grey… Greying is determined mostly by genetics and ageing. As you age, you naturally produce less melanin (the molecules responsible for your hair’s colour), which causes new hair to come in grey. While there is currently little scientific evidence that stress causes your hair to actually turn grey, it can speed up the ageing and fallout process, which would cause you to experience more incoming grey hairs if your body is already producing less melanin. In other words, stress over time may hasten the greying process, but there is no strong scientific evidence demonstrating a cause-and-effect relationship. MYTH 2: Frequent shampooing damages your hair. TRUTH: You have probably heard that frequent shampooing can cause damage to your hair… Yeah, not true! How often you cleanse your hair is dependent upon your hair type, hairstyle, and lifestyle. If your hair is oily wash it. If not your good to go until you feel like your hair needs a freshen up. Either way, you want to make sure you’re washing your hair with a shampoo that’s formulated for your hair type, at least every couple of days as infrequent washing can lead to a buildup of dead cells, product residue, oil, and bacteria—all of which can cause inflammation.. Now that’s the serious damage to avoid! MYTH 3: It’s better to air dry your hair than to blow dry it. TRUTH: Believe it or not, this one is actually both true and false. While it’s recommended that you spare your strands from a daily blast of hot air, it’s also not a great idea to air dry your hair every day either. According to a recent study, blow drying causes more damage to the hair’s surface, but air drying actually causes more damage within the strands themselves, which may actually be worse.. Who would have thought… When your hair is exposed to water for extended periods of time, it swells up and puts pressure on the proteins that keep your hair intact, potentially causing more damage than hot styling. We suggest to use the lowest heat setting on your dryer (or hold it at least six inches away from your hair), making sure to move the dryer continuously, so you don’t concentrate heat on any one spot for too long, and only blow dry your hair after you have washed it to avoid hot styling your hair every day! You can mix up your routine of air drying and blow drying to keep things balanced too! Want someone else to handle your hair care needs for you? I got you covered! Best beauty regime in your 40’s

Young children may accompany your 40s, which means your poor, tired skin will suffer from sleepless nights and eating leftover spaghetti. Your skin cell turnover rate has halved since your 20s, meaning wrinkles have sunk in and your skin is probably a little less radiant. Hormonal changes are also common, as your levels of estrogen decline, affecting the function of fibroblasts, which produce elastin and collagen, and melanocytes that keep the skin firm, smooth, and toned. Hopefully, you have been doing a double cleanse for the last few decades, if not there’s no better time to start. You will then follow this by toning your skin. You want to use a toner that will hydrate and rebalance your skin, so look for toners infused with rich moisturising ingredients like natural botanicals and peptides. Peptides are amazing for ageing skin as they comprise chains of amino acids that can help with cell renewal and tissue repair. You will then need to exfoliate. Exfoliation is an essential step in all skincare regimes, but it’s especially important for mature skin as it helps increase skin renewal. If you haven’t already invested in a serum, now is the time. Serums have a lightweight formula with a smaller molecular structure, which means they can penetrate further and repair and hydrate the skin at a much deeper level. The next step we recommend is using a brightening agent in the daytime, we like to use vitamin C in the morning to fight against pollution and protect our skin during the daytime, and then use retinol in the evening. In your 40s, your skin gets thinner from a loss of collagen, which leads to fine lines and smile creases. Therefore you need to boost your skin’s natural collagen by using a retinoid. Your eyes are one of the first places to show signs of ageing as the skin around the eye is superdelicate, so you should be using an eye cream day and night. Look for a formula that has antioxidants and retinol, as these will deliver the best results. By now you’re probably a moisturising pro, and you know you need to use it both morning and night. But you also need to make sure it’s the correct formula, enriched with anti-aging ingredients. Nighttime Additions Only In your 40s your skincare regime is all about hydration and locking in as much moisture as possible. Adding a face oil is a must. Oils are lipophilic, which means they have a smaller molecular structure so they can penetrate further into your dermis, allowing your skin to retain hydration at a much deeper level. They’ll also repair and protect the skin’s barrier while nourishing the skin. Plus, as you’re using a lot of anti-aging ingredients like retinol and AHAs, which can be drying, an oil will rebalance hydration levels. We also suggest using a sleeping mask as they create a layer of protection, allowing the active ingredients to penetrate while you get your beauty sleep. For personalised advice, book in for our prescription facial. In this 90min treatment, we will assess your needs and perform a treatment specifically designed for you. We will also send you home with an all-inclusive skin care kit to maintain those results at home and putting you on a skincare plan to achieve your goals!

Why are we a sustainable salon?

We have a responsibility to protect our home and our bodies. Many toxins and chemicals in conventional cosmetics are pollutants and degrade the environment as well as our bodies. Thankfully we as a society are becoming more aware of these issues and there is now a growing demand for natural, toxic free products and services. Below are our top 3 reasons for being a sustainable hair and beauty salon Plastics Hair and beauty salons are a major player in the amount of plastic waste that is contributed to landfill every year. Every hour, we throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles (22 billion plastic bottles per year) Mind blowing right! I could not contribute to this waste cycle any more and have phased out 90% of the plastic bottles used and sold in an ordinary hair and beauty salon. At Bare Beauty House we support brands that package their products in infinitely recyclable materials, being glass and aluminium. We are also a member of Sustainable Salons who recycle all our salon waste and help us work towards our target of 0% waste. Natural Healing Natural and oleochemical ingredients are less likely to cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. Without synthetic, toxic chemicals or artificial colours, sustainable products rely on the healing properties found naturally in plants. Consider glycerine, this clear, non-toxic liquid is used in soaps, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Since it is a humectant, glycerine can retain water, making it an excellent moisturiser. Glycerine enhances the body’s ability to absorb water, encouraging the skin to absorb and hold on to as much as possible. As a non-irritating substance, it can be applied anywhere on the body. It is also an effective anti-aging ingredient and, due to its anti-microbial properties, and can also serve as an acne treatment. An oleochemical that has all the power of synthetic chemicals without any of the toxicity, glycerine is a perfect example of the natural effectiveness of sustainable cosmetics. Natural Health and Beauty While petrochemicals may deliver short-term results, the long-term effects can be highly toxic to humans and the environment. Years of synthetic cosmetics use have been traced to headaches, eye damage, acne, hormonal imbalance and premature ageing. Phthalates have even been linked to cancer and type 2 diabetes. By choosing products that contain natural ingredients, we are investing in your long-term health and beauty, and not polluting our environment. So really, the question should be… why wouldn’t we be committed to sustainable beauty?! Want to know more about sustainable beauty? Sign up for The Bare Facts at barebeautyhouse.com

Healthy hair, skin and nails starts in your fridge

You might be surprised how much your food affects your skin and hair! You really are what you eat! I have put together a list of delicious foods that will help your hair grow thicker, your skin stay hydrated and your nails stay stronger. There’s one food in particular that will help reduce heart disease, improve your brain function, and hit that sweet spot! Snacks Berries are LOADED with potent antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. These fruits are some of the best to eat to heal damage of hair, skin and nails. Nuts are rich in omega fatty acids, vitamins, antioxidants and minerals, which are all beneficial! Their nutrients help encourage the healthy growth of hair, skin and nails. Oats are one of the best whole grain sources. They contain protein, biotin, anti-inflammatory properties, magnesium, and potassium. They are also high fibre and antioxidants, providing our cells with nutritional support. Dark chocolate helps skin stay hydrated and protects skin from sun damage. It will also help reduce heart disease and improve your brain function. I always aim for dark chocolate that has at least 75% or higher cacao. #winning Did you need any more excuses to eat chocolate? Proteins Salmon is loaded with vitamin D and protein, and it also contains omega-3 fatty acids that promote hair growth by keeping your scalp healthy. Egg yolks contain biotin, which is a B Vitamin. When Biotin levels are low, it may result in brittle nails and hair loss, while healthy levels of biotin may actually reverse such conditions. Fruit and Veg Avocado is a fantastic source of Vitamin E, Vitamin B and healthy fats. The vitamins and nutritions in avocado work at the cellular level to protect and strengthen hair. Vitamin B is essential for hair growth. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps repair damage on the scalp which may slow or prevent hair growing. They also fight the signs of ageing and prevent against inflammation of the skin. Sweet Potatoes contain beta-carotene, which helps keep your skin healthy by acting as a natural sunblock. It has also been proven that beta-carotene adds warm tones to the skin, which shows an overall healthier look. Greens like kale and spinach provide Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent hair breakage and repairs the skin from any damage caused by exposure to UV rays and environmental toxins. Vitamin C also helps to boost collagen production, promoting the skin’s firmness and elasticity. Spinach and kale are great sources of phytonutrients, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Spinach also helps with the skin’s elasticity. Tomatoes, another great source of Vitamin C and contains all the major carotenoids, including lycopene. Beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene have been shown to protect the skin against damage from the sun and may also help prevent signs of ageing. As mentioned above, Vitamin C is an antioxidant that strengthens hair follicles and prevents breakage. Red and yellow bell peppers are another source of beta-carotene. They have a high amount of Vitamin C, an antioxidant that creates collagen, which keeps skin firm and strong. #Winning It’s really amazing what fruit and veggies can do for us. Ensuring you are eating a colourful diet will help you achieve your beauty goals! I hope I was able to provide you some valuable tips and information. 23 Easy Tips to be more sustainable at home

Sustainable living describes a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual’s or society’s use of the Earth’s natural resources, and one’s personal resources. On the surface, it can be incredibly daunting to reduce your environmental footprint, especially when you see that others around you seem to be sailing through their sustainable journey. When you break it down into small steps, you realise you have more power than you thought. To take the stress out of things I wanted to put together a list of 23 simple things you can do around the house to make a big difference, AND they will also help save you money.
  1. Use LED lighting or CFL bulbs instead of incandescent lighting as it’s proven to last longer, which reduces the need to keep purchasing light bulbs.
  2. Put on an extra layer of clothing instead of turning on the heating. Seriously, doubling up on your socks does wonders!
  3. Open up your blinds and use as much natural light as possible before switching on your light bulbs. You all get to enjoy some more sunshine 🙂
  4. Turn off your lights when you leave a room.
  5. Put up a no junk mail sign on your letterbox to limit the amount of paper waste.
  6. Hang your wet clothes on a drying line or rack instead of using a powered dryer.
  7. Grow your own herbs, fruit and vegetables, even if it’s just a few pots around the house, it all helps!
  8. Turn off your devices at night, including your wifi box.
  9. Get a water-saving shower head.
  10. Use organic fertilisers.
  11. Purchase recycled toilet paper with plastic-free packaging. #whogivesacrap
  12. On the topic of toilets, use scrap paper, newspaper, or toilet paper to collect pet poo.
  13. Juice the off-cuts of your vegetables and fruits.
  14. Repurpose glass jars.
  15. Use washable metal straws instead of disposable plastic straws.
  16. Limit the use of hot water when hand washing dishes.

The best beauty regime in your 20’s & 30’s

Skincare in your '20s is practically non-existent (let's be real), your '30s you'll likely still be battling with adult acne as well as the first signs of ageing (it's all about prevention at this stage). Below is a simple routine to follow that will almost guarantee having amazing, radiant skin later in life!  In your 20s is the time to get one lifelong habit on lockdown! The best skincare routine for youthful skin starts with a simple double cleanse. If there’s one skincare rule that everyone should know, it’s the power of double cleansing. The benefit of double cleansing is that the first cleanser will break down any makeup, remove dirt and excess oils from the day, and clean your skin. The second cleanser will address your particular skin type or concern and should have ingredients to hydrate, smooth or exfoliate and treat acne. With such youthful skin, this simple double cleanse is basically your skin care routine. The only minor additions would be to use eye cream, retinol, and always wear SPF! 💋 In your 30s you may notice that your skin has changing needs in this decade. It’s possible you’ll shift from having oily skin to dry skin and you may even see visible signs of ageing, like dark spots and crow’s feet. That’s why putting together a skin care routine that can help address your new skin care concerns is key. Washing your face is something you should do morning and night, no matter your age. That being said, you may want to consider switching up what facial cleanser you use. You may need something a bit stronger to improve skin tone. Consider adding an anti-ageing product to your skin care routine. This will help strengthen and repair the skin barrier to help resist visible signs of ageing. Apply an eye cream using a roller, then moisturise and protect your skin from the sun. At night time repeat the double cleanse, add a peel pad and then follow up with a dual action overnight moisturiser. You can show your skin some extra love with a face mask once a week. You can also consider using an overnight face mask as the last step in your routine. Remember Your skin is one of the largest organs your body has, and it works hard every day to protect our bodies from harmful elements. Taking care of your skin and developing a skin care routine at any age is important, because it can help this organ do its job better and longer. Hopefully you can start developing a skin care routine to suit your age and lifestyle, if you want to give yourself an extra treat and gain some personal skin care advice, book in for our prescription facial where we will assess your skin care needs, perform the appropriate facial treatment for your desired results and send you home with an all inclusive skin care package.
